On Tuesday Jill started her first day at Middle School, Kate started her first day at a new school (she was at a different school for kindergarten) and Ellie had her first day with a MAN teacher. I’m not sure why she was nervous about that. Maybe she didn’t want to miss out on all the nervous sleeplessness that seemed to be going around!
Jill’s nervousness was probably the most warranted. Not only was it a new school, but a whole new group of kids (all older), a new schedule with six teachers instead of one an a LOCKER. She also didn’t know what her schedule was going to be or who was going to be in her her classes until she showed up for the first day. That’s a tough one for my kid who like to plan and control all parts of her day.
Turns out she had nothing to worry about. Her best friend is in three of her six classes, she was actually helping OTHERS with their lockers and she didn’t get lost once. She is even looking forward to jumping in and doing some actual learning. She’s tired of all the paperwork she had to fill out for each class. Welcome to my world kid!
Kate has spent a ton of time at the elementary school, but she’d never actually been a student there until Tuesday. Such is the life of a third kid. We didn’t think Kate would be nervous at all but we got a bit of a glimpse of her nervousness when she realized she had no idea where the bathroom was. Good thing she got to go on a Grizzly Bear hunt with her class. Apparently Gilman the Grizzly is a slippery little devil because just when they thought they had him they’d find a note (on the bathroom door, in the lunch room, on the doors to recess…) saying ‘You missed me!’ They finally caught up to him back in their classroom. Kate was quick to point out that this was a Scavenger Hunt and not a Treasure Hunt because there really wasn’t a prize in the end. Sure, but at lease she knows where the bathroom is now!
I think Ellie was just looking for a good excuse to be nervous. Her teacher is fantastic and I am looking forward partnering with him to make sure Ellie is on track. Somehow she seemed to fall off the tracks at the end of the year last year but I think this year is going to be a great year! Ellie was most nervous about meeting up with her good friends. There are three girls that have been good buds for a few years and it turns out they are all in different classes. What are the chances of that? (I’m not very good at math so I really wouldn’t know!) I guess it means that nobody can feel left out, right? The first thing they did was set up a meeting spot on the playground and the year was off and running.
So, what was the first for me? Tuesday was the first time I’ve had a complete, coherent thought since school let out in June. Boy did it feel good!
