This year was the first time in a LONG time that we were all able to help with my nephew, Henry’s, birthday party. My sister Joelle always does an amazing job of pulling together a theme for a birthday party and this year was no exception. In fact, it was even more miraculous given that she moved less than two weeks ago!
Aliens was the winning theme this year. Joelle’s favorite thing to do for any party is the cake. (I totally agree with this!) After picking up a silver charger and small glass bowl at Michael’s she had her inspiration! Sweet tarts, silver sprinkles and a plastic alien from their own personal collection and she had herself a UFO.
While Joelle and I like to work on the details of a party, the kids really love the activities. This year they made UFO rockets from film canisters (what are THOSE relics?) and alka seltzer…
They next decorated flying saucers (or green plates) and had fun trying to land them in the hula hoop planets…
Since it was 95 degrees outside (not even exaggerating) a water break was in order to rehydrate the earthlings!
Next they moved on to a game called Martians vs Aliens that was somewhat like capture the flag but the Earthlings (party goers) had to capture the moon rocks from the Martians (the big girls) without getting tagged. It all seemed quite chaotic and complicated to my feeble brain but the kids all understood and enjoyed it immensely!
They ended the party with a bit of a cool down by opening presents and eating cake. As you can see by the bright red faces and sweat pouring off their brows that it was HOT! But hey, who ever said that Mars was cold, right?!?
One more thing…this two headed Martian kitty was happy to be confined to a cool safe place while all the crazy was going on outside!
