Just before Thanksgiving Joelle came over for a girlie crafting afternoon. (I know, I’m a bit slow in sharing this one!) For my birthday she had made me an adorable felt flower and raved about how easy it was to make. So we kidnapped her away from all the testosterone at her house and had her come teach us the ways of the felt flower.
I gathered all of my felt scraps and my glue gun and she brought hers too. She also brought along links to all of her favorite online tutorials. Joelle and I approach a project very differently and my kids mirror those differences too. Joelle likes to see how something is done and then she makes it her own. I, on the other hand, prefer to see step by step instructions that I will follow to the letter the first time. THEN I make it my own. The girls are similar. Jill needs a pattern and step by step instructions, Ellie wants to see how it’s done and then tweaks it to make it better and Kate doesn’t want anything to do with a pattern. She can do it better than the instructor right from the get go thank you very much! (In the picture below it appears as if she is actually using a pattern but I think it is to humor her Aunty Jo Jo.)
So, armed with patterns for some and ideas for others, we spent a lovely afternoon hand crafting gifts for family and friends. Joelle was shocked that the girls had such a long attention span. (Apparently her 2 and 3 year old boys don’t spend three minutes doing a craft, never mind three hours!)
