That’s what Allen asked no less than 13 times on Sunday.
Guess What? WE ARE AT THE OLYMPICS!
He was beyond excited and that excitement was infectious. But after the 12th ‘Guess What’ this was the response Allen was starting to get…
We’ve had our tickets for 16 months and we’ve been just waiting for the Olympics to start.
Do you KNOW what event we had tickets for? Freestyle Men’s Moguls! The most magical event of the Olympics so far! I can’t use enough exclamation points to get my excitement across!!!
Let me just start by saying that all of my family is Canadian and we have what might be considered a ‘cross border’ marriage. (This phrase was shared with us by another family that was waving both Canadian and American flags.) That means we were waving flags for many of the different athletes and the newly purchased cowbells (I may regret that purchase in a week from now.) for everybody else.
Olympic competition is a game of hurry up and wait. We were on Cypress Mountain for six hours and there was only two hours of competition. Allen and I were a bit worried about how the girls would hold up but the weather was amazingly sunny, we were dressed warmly, and there was plenty to look at.
Ultimately the race was so exciting. At one point it looked like the Canadians were going to take gold and silver and the crowd was going wild. BUT, the best competitors were to come at the end. Brian Wilson from the USA had a great run, the Australian was very good and Alexandre Bilodeau from Canada was fantastic. Then there was one last competitor from France and the crowd was on pins and needles. It looked like a good run. It looked perfect, in fact. When his scores were posted the crowd went wild. Strangers were hugging, flags were flying and tears were flowing. We were carried away by the spirit of the crowd. Truely amazing!
Allen and I talked later about how if France had won in the end we would have said ‘Yeah, that was a cool event to go to.’, but the fact that a Canadian one their first ever medal on home soil made the whole evening magical.
Favorite quotes of the day…
1. When Brian Wilson was getting ready to come down the mountain the crowd was chanting U-S-A, U-S-A. Kate turned to me and asked me ‘What are Canada’s initials?’
2. Five minutes after the final scores came out Ellie turned to me excitedly and said ‘Mom! That lady behind us said we witnessed history!’
3. On our shuttle ride home Kate looked at Allen and I and said ‘This was the bestest day ever!’
PRICELESS!
