After Ellie’s birthday (see here) we gave Cooper the toys that helped decorate the table. I suspect that one of those toys, turned from a $1.50 bargain to a $1500 extravagance. Unfortunately Cooper was the unwitting ‘middle’ man in the transformation of that toy.
Poor Coop spent last Tuesday sick as a dog. (Sorry, I HAD to go there!) Since he was still sick on early Wednesday morning I hustled him down to the emergency dog clinic. They were so nice to our furry boy and they ran a battery of tests, including blood work, xrays, a barium test and fecal culture. They had to keep him over night to make sure there was no blockage that required surgery (there wasn’t) and that he was able to eat and drink again without giving it back. I happily picked him up Thursday morning, paid my bill, and took Cooper home to the waiting arms of the girls. We all missed him!
I have to say, though, that this happy story might not have been possible without the Healthy Paws Pet Insurance we have for Cooper. I was skeptical about this insurance because of the monthly cost. I’m too practical for my own good and I just didn’t want to add to my monthly expenses. I can’t tell you what peace of mind it gave me to know that we could do all of the tests that needed to be done to solve his medical mystery. Our last dog was not covered by insurance. At the end of her life, when she needed all sorts of expensive treatments, it was really difficult to decide. Should we send Kate to college or treat Bailey’s cancer? Tough call! The $1500 bill that came along with this little adventure will only cost us $250 out of pocket. What a relief that we have a dog that is on the mend and we don’t have to eat Top Ramen for the rest of the month!
From now on Cooper will be strictly a bone and ball type of guy. No more stuffies for him. Even WITH insurance, we just can’t afford it!
