On a whim, at the beginning of the summer, I suggested to Jill and her friend Madison that they should put together a camp for their siblings and neighbors. I thought this might be a fun activity for the girls because they were just learning of all the benefits of Pinterest.
Two weeks ago the girls hosted this camp and it was a smashing success. On Day One the theme was the Olympics. The kids made flags for their teams, had relay races, a tug of war, balloon fencing, made catapults and did a nature scavenger hunt. Day Two was Harry Potter where they were sorted into houses, had a quidditch match, painted new wands and made pipe cleaner glasses. Day Three was Water Day where they had a water balloon fight, had water balloon target practice, tie-dyed shirts and played water gun tag. I’m sure I’ve forgotten some things because the days were so action packed!
Although there was some stress and a few tears because Jill wanted everything to be perfect for these kids, I think she and Madison really learned a lot. How to manage their time, how to plan for snacks and activities for a crowd and how to corral a group. It was really hard for me to sit on my hands and not offer too much advice. (I did review the list of activities and suggest they add more to fill the days.) I also only attended the tie-dying part because I wanted to do a shirt too! But the screams of laughter and fun that were filtering to me in the house were music to my ears.
Well done girls!
