Yesterday was Kate’s first day of kindergarten and she could hardly wait. She was up at 6:30 in the morning asking when it was going to be time to leave. (Not for more than two hours!) Her outfit had been planned for weeks, her backpack was all primed and she’d even aquired some new (albeit used) keychains from her sisters to decorate it up.
Allen and I drove her to school and waited with her while her teacher tallied up her classmates. When it was time to go, Kate and her little buddy Chloe (Who’s brother is in Ellie’s class at a completely different school!) led the pack and Kate never looked back. A ton of parents followed the class up to their classroom but I could tell Kate was getting more nervous the longer we waited around so we waved goodbye and she was off.
Kate had a great day with only one disappointment. She didn’t get any homework. I’ll be sure and show her this post when she is in highschool. During craft time she made a handprint with a heart in the middle and the cutest little poem:
I made this print just for you
at school on my very first day
it’s made with love and my handprint
in a very special way.
Now you can sit down on the floor
with your favorite kindergarten kid
we will look at it together
while I tell you all the fun things we did!
She told me that I could look at it any time I missed her. Sniff. Sniff.
Here are my favorites…
One more funny story – I was told that I had to make a special laminated tag for Kate’s backpack with all of her contact information. I obviously needed a project because I designed one in Photoshop and backed it with cute scrapbook paper before I laminated it. When Allen heard about this he called me an ‘over achiever’. Ellie said, ‘Yeah, Mom. You’re a Golden Retriever!’
