This week we taught the gang about the Rule of Thirds. I have to admit that I really don’t know what the Rule of Thirds was when I first started taking pictures. Actually, I didn’t really know what it was until a couple of years ago when I looked it up. Turns out that I’ve been using it in my photography the whole time, but I wasn’t even aware of it. That’s how organic this rule is.
Next we looked at some examples of pictures with and without the grid so they can see how the photographers made their shots. (Please note that I didn’t take these pictures. They were just examples I found online!)
I also found this fun little graphic showing the rule of thirds done right and wrong. Isn’t the picture on the right much more pleasing to look at?
Finally we talked about how images can be cropped to the Rule of Thirds too. So if you don’t get the image right in camera you crop it to a pleasing composition. If at first you don’t succeed. Try try again! (These images ARE mine.)
Of course all rules are meant to be broken, but it’s always a good rule of thumb to learn the rule before you do that!
