Mr. Fun loves March Madness. He loves to study the teams and carefully make his picks. He loves it so much that is has filled out brackets for at least six different pools.
He loves it so much that he was thrilled with the arrival of our third child. She was born on the first day of March Madness in 2004. That means that he got to see all of the games (with the exception of the 20 minutes I was pushing our bundle of joy out) for the first two weeks of the tourney during his paternity leave.
He loves it so much that he worked hard to figure out how to make this time of year relevant for his non-sports loving daughters. He encouraged all of them to fill out a bracket however they wanted. Jill picked the school names she liked, Kate picked the mascots she liked and I really have no idea what Ellie’s strategy was. We are all playing for an ice cream date with Mr. Fun. (And bragging rights. I am in a pool too but I only care about beating Mr. Fun. It’s not looking good this year…)
It’s working too. The girls have been coming home from school and asking how they are doing. Ellie, in particular, has been a big surprise for us. She is actually sitting and watching games. That is unheard of for our girls! (I do have to say that Ellie watched a lot of football with us too this year. Awesome!)
I’m wondering if there is a way to get this to translate into other activities we want to encourage. Like, could we have a bracket for chores where there could be competitions to get them done the fastest? Maybe we could use the bracket to study multiplication tables? Clearly I don’t have the details worked out but there must be a way to capitalize on this new enthusiasm.
