Over winter break I assigned a little research project to Jill. We have a crappy little pay as you go phone for her which has been fine except it doesn’t have any sort of keyboard so texting is a big chore. The phone doesn’t do much for her so she often forgets to carry it which defeats the purpose of having a phone at all!
So I planted the seed that she might want to think about upgrading her phone with her birthday money. In order to know what that means though she had to research family plans between AT&T and Verizon (I’m an iPhone gal and those are the only two plans that I’d consider.) and the pay as you go plans. We gave her all the stats about MY usage so she would know what family plans would make sense and then asked her to gather data and make a recommendation. (Shhh….we asked her to do math)
She spent days online asking about roll over minutes and nationwide plans and what nights and weekends were all about. She also figured out that she wanted a QWERTY keyboard (she didn’t know that terminology) and what refurbished means. She put all of her findings into the table below.
After days of back and forth I think she made a great decision. She was choosing between two phones (touch screens and qwerty keyboards) and she went with the one that has the slide out keyboard. She also recommended that we go with AT&T if we did the family plan, but we decided to keep her on the pay as you go plan because of the unlimited texting for her. If she is like me she will text more than she calls.
Her work was top notch because she was motivated and passionate about this project. Hallelujah! This project has been on my own list forever and I have been neither motivated nor passionate about getting it done. Hmm…what else can I take off of my list and assign to my kids. I sure could use a new marketing plan. How about a new household budget? Ooh, I know, maybe I could get Kate to weigh the pros and cons of Tostidos vs Costco tortilla chips…
