Last Monday the school district gave us a gift in the form of a big yellow bus. Kate goes to all day kindergarten at a different elementary school in our district because our school has more than 900 (K-5) kids and there just wasn’t room to offer it.
For the first five weeks of school all 44 kids had to be dropped off and picked up in person at this other school. You can imagine the havoc we (the parents of these 44 kiddos) wreaked on the parking lot traffic at this school. The school is a 15 minute drive from our house so there was no chance of any of them walking!
Because of all this, the school district gave us the greatest gift of all. A bus to ride. I was so surprised by my own reaction to this gift. When I put Kate on the bus the first day of the week I totally teared up. I didn’t even cry on her first day of school for heaven’s sake!
She loves this bus and how it makes her such a big kid. She has the best driver in the world (Scott was Ellie’s kindergarten bus driver too and we love him!). He always has a big good morning for the kids as they get on, guides them with a firm hand to the right seats and then has them ‘shoulder dancing’ (dancing while only moving your shoulders of course) all the way to school to the tunes he pipes over the loud speaker.
This week was the first week of bus riding and it was Kate’s ‘best part of the day’ every day. Fun!
And look who likes to come to the bus stop too…
