Last week we got a dumping of snow. I know you East Coast folks think our measly 3-6 inches is nothing, but when you have lots hills and very little snow moving equipment it tends to paralyze us. The good thing was that our school district was already closed for winter break so all we had to do was sit back and enjoy.
Actually the girls did very little sitting back. They built three snowmen and had a huge snowball fight. This is the story of the last snowman. I came in partway through his inception. This is what I saw when I looked out the window. Three huge snow balls and a mighty struggle to lift them. There was no way they were going to be able to lift this thing off the ground so they had to start thinking of a strategy. Jill was intrigued with this problem so she joined in at this point too.
First the girls thought about using the sled to move the ball into place…
Turns out the snowball was so heavy they were afraid it would break the sled. Plan B was a piece of plywood they found in the garage. As you can see, though, that is one mother lode of a snowball. You should have heard the massive cracking noises when they rolled the ball onto the board!
They got a bit smarter after this and decided to support the board with snow under it. It was so cool to watch these guys using physics to solve their problem! (I didn’t tell them, though, because I didn’t want to burst their little fun bubble with some practical information.)
It took all of them to roll that snow ball up the ramp. Unfortunately they had a steering issue at the top…
And the mighty snowman belly crashed into many pieces…
Being the smart kids that they are they decided to go a different route with round two. Instead of making a ball and placing it on top, they took the chunks of snowman guts and reassembled them in place.
Finally, we trolled through the pantry to find some facial features and here is what they ended up with:
Did you notice how bare the deck was when they were done? Right after the girls came back in Mother Nature dumped three more inches to give Sunny, the snowman, a lovely carpet of marshmallow fluff.
Well done girls!
