Of course Ellie and Kate aren’t twins, but people used to ask if there were all the time. They do, however, have some twin tendencies.
Both of these girls have night terrors and walk in their sleep. It is not unusual for Kate to fall out of bed but it will be Ellie that is crying (in separate rooms). Or Ellie will have a night terror and two minutes after we get her settled Kate will cry out too (neither one remembers the next day). One night last month Allen walked Ellie back to her room (she was sleep walking out to the stair landing) only to find that Kate had slept walked (is that a word?) into Jill’s room and was messing around with her stereo. None of them remembered that one!
These two girlies have always had an affinity for each other. Don’t get me wrong, they are all very close, but Ellie really knows how to push Kate’s buttons and very often takes the brunt of Kate’s frustrations. Take, for example, our holiday departure from Allen’s folks’ house. To be fair, Allen and I completely mis-communicated on the order of events so we got the girls worked up before we even left the house. It was raining, it was late, we had two wet dogs to get in the car and three girlies who needed to get into the car WITHOUT stepping on the assembled lego structures that were going to be at their feet. This perfect storm of events led to the girls stressing out while trying to get into the car. Ellie wouldn’t let Kate in through her door because she was afraid for her legos so Kate hauled off and bit her in the butt! That led to major screaming for both of them. Kate because she felt so bad about what she’d done and Ellie because it hurt. Ellie actually stopped crying first! We finally got everybody calmed down but Kate started crying all over again once we got home because she saw the evidence of her crime. (Major bruise!) Kate was a biter when she was a baby and Ellie was her favorite victim.
But all is not negative. They also have a very close relationship. Two days before Christmas, Ellie told me that she was having trouble sleeping because she was worried that she hadn’t been good enough and that Santa would not bring her a gift. After I assured her that Santa would, indeed, have a present in his sack with her name on it she calmed down a bit. Then she asked. ‘Okay, but what about Kate?’ I’m sure that you are thinking she was flashing back to the biting incident, but Ellie was truly worried that Kate would get nothing and she was frightened for her. (I love that she wasn’t worried about Jill at all!) She knew that if one of them didn’t get a gift then none of them would be happy. I totally understand that fear because I felt the same exact way about my sister.
Okay, enough of the worlds longest blog post. I just wanted to make sure those little diddy’s made it into by blog book for the year. Sure hope it doesn’t come back to bite me!
