I lava you so much! Wish I’d heard that joke before Sunday. My amazing nephew Jack had an even more amazing science birthday party this weekend to celebrate his 5th birthday and the Enebo clan was invited to help. This is going to be a long post but I just can’t figure out which pictures to leave out so grab your favorite liquid concoction and read on!
First some background on the origins of this party. One morning Jack crawled into bed with Joelle and Stephen and detailed out exactly what he wanted at his birthday party. In particular he wanted a science party that had erupting volcanos, bird watching and red lava m&m’s as a parting gift. I think they are going to have to cut off his Pinterest account. This kid is GOOD!
Joelle filled in with some extra experiments, a colorful table and an awesome volcano cake. Here are some of the details.
When the boys arrived they all received a lab coat (a men’s white t-shirt cut open in the front), a set of lab glasses (safety first!) and a name tag.
Then they were sent out back to start at the bird watching station. This was so cute. Joelle cut out all sorts of construction paper birds and scattered them around the yard. The boys were instructed to circle all the birds they could see (through the provided binoculars). They were so into it!
Once all the scientists had arrived the chief scientist explained how all the three experiments worked and then let the boys, ahem chemists, choose where and when they wanted to attempt them. They could choose volcanos. This brave experiment entailed pouring red vinegar into a small bottle with baking soda thereby causing it to erupt. (I say brave because this experiment was set up in the living room. With red food coloring. With four and five year olds. Need I go on?)
They could also choose to make silly puddy by suffusing a whole bottle of glue and about 1/4 cup of starch. To make this experiment the scientists have to get their hands dirty and work the compound until it solidifies. Gross!
The last experiment was a lava lamp. This involves a mixture of oil and water in a bottle and the chemists added food coloring and then dropped in the secret catalyst (alka seltzer) that made the color start bubbling up. The kids loved this because they could keep adding other food colors to see what would happen.
After all the experiments were completed the birthday scientist opened his presents.
One of them, in particular, cracked me up. It was a card game with pictures. The players each receive a certain number of picture cards and the players take turns adding parts to a story. I can only imagine that, in a house full of boys, the most popular card in this deck is going to be the steaming pile of poop. Oh my!
To finish up the party the scientists enjoyed volcano cake and lava juice. Apparently you must assume a super hero pose to blow out an erupting volcano!
Before everybody left for their own personal laboratories we took one last group shot. Look at how cute these boys are!
Thanks for inviting us to your special celebration Jack!
