I love to decorate. I think it’s the creative in me that loves the artistry in it. I’m not just talking about Christmas decorating either. So I’ve had a banner year because I’ve had plenty to decorate with the new house!
In the past few years I’ve really scaled back on many of my holiday decorations because I’ve just wanted it to be more simple. I don’t have littles who need a lot of the over the top decorations and nicknacks. When we moved I gave away a lot of decorations. Not nearly enough, though, because I’ve got five boxes in my storage area FULL of decorations and my house is as decorated as it’s going to get! I’m not going to get rid of any more because my girls will be getting their own houses in the coming years and I think they will enjoy a lot of them. They even have a box that is labeled ‘Box of Sentimental Value’ that I’m not allowed to touch. Ha!
Here is what I came up with for the new house. I thought I might share so I could have it appear in this year’s blog book. Enjoy!
The tree is the crown jewel. We used to have five trees (you can do that when there is a tree farm in the family!) in our last out but this year we pared down to just one. Even though it’s such an important part of the decorations, nobody here likes to decorate it! So we decided to stick with our favorite tree from our last house. It’s the card tree. We put lights, a garland and a star on the tree and then let all of our friends and family do the rest of the decorating. We add all of the cards we receive during the season. It is so much fun to see all of these smiling faces as we sit in our living room! To fit the decor of the house I did make a new black and white tree skirt and then I had some fun matching up the wrapping this year too.
We added a few of our favorite Christmas doo dads to our shelves too…
The kitchen got a few decorations too. I love having some decorations we can keep on our kitchen table. I purchased the big tree and added it to the smaller mercury trees I’ve had for a few years. They were a good match and fit perfectly in our lazy susan along with some lights and candles.
We added a bit of Christmas to the kitchen shelves and the window itself…
Ellie helped me with my vision for the counters. I really wanted some little snow scapes with gingerbread houses. Over Thanksgiving she helped me make the houses and did all of the fun piping work. I’m lucky to have an artist in residence!
Even the bathroom got a cute little holiday update.
And of course the outside. I’ve never been one to put lights up on my whole house. (Much to my kids’ chagrin when they were young. They even wanted to put a sign in the front yard saying ‘We wanted lights but my Mom won’t let us!’). I do love to decorate my front door, though. I love that my new entry way is smaller so I can really do it up!
And now that I have my pictures I’m off to do my Christmas baking. Off to make a mess. Cheers!
