It was time. It was something I’d never done. I can’t believe I have to admit that! Until last weekend, I had never hired anybody to take my OWN family pictures. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got some great family pictures, but I’ve always set them up and just asked somebody to push the button.
So it was time. Time to get some great pictures of my family and time to do a little research so I hired one of my favorite photographers. Three and a half years ago I took a workshop from her that kicked my business into high gear so it was only natural that I would turn to her for this momentous occasion. It was fascinating to be on the other side. I used to feel sympathy when when my clients would describe the trials and tribulations of finding the perfect outfits. Now I feel empathy. Holy moly, what a process!
As soon as I booked our photo sessions I happily started trolling the internet for just the right outfits. As I was doing this I was chattering away with Jill who was sitting around the corner. When I finally stopped to take a breath I realized I could hear little sobbing noises. Huh? It suddenly occurred to me that Jill wasn’t nearly as excited as excited about this photo shoot as I was.
Here’s how my positive parenting moment went:
“Are you crying?!? ” I asked incredulously.
Silence
“Are you crying about the outfit I haven’t even bought for you yet?!?” I shrilled.
Sniffle. “I’m going to be coooollllld.” Jill simpered.
“What? Do you know how many kids would LOVE a new outfit? Including your sisters?!? GO TO YOUR ROOM!”
Feel free to use any of those lines if you too would like to alienate your pre-teen.
So the following weekend Jill and I spent 5 hours finding the perfect outfits for everybody. Jill’s outfit morphed from a cute purple dress she claimed she would never wear again to capri jeans from her favorite store (Aeropostale) and a cute pinky purple t-shirt and cami. All of which she liked. Because I needed some buy in for the day of the photo session I had to point out this transition to Jill. I had to show her how much I had compromised on her outfit to make sure she would be compromising on hair style for the big day. I know, big surprise, right? We don’t agree on the best style for her hair either. Sigh…
I enjoyed seeing how Me Ra communicated with her clients prior to the session and I loved seeing how she worked with us to get the poses she was envisioning. I am so curious to see what she captured! Did she see the fun that we like to have? Did she see how close we are? Did she capture the fact that I put together 5 GREAT outfits?
Well, I won’t know for 6-8 weeks so I will just have to wait to find out. I can hardly wait!
