This year our neighborhood and town decided to cut back on their holiday lights. Not only is it expensive keep the lights on, but it’s expensive to put them up and take them down. (When my brother was little this is what he wanted to do when he grew up. Be the Christmas light guy!) I explained to the girls that the city decided not to put up lights (and our own neighborhood cut way back) because of the economy. I told them that somebody probably got to keep their job because of this cost cutting measure.
The girls mulled this over a bit and then the conversation turned to teachers losing their jobs. (14 teachers at our school were laid off at the beginning of the summer and then rehired at the end when they saw our numbers.) Kate was stricken at the thought of losing her teacher. She said ‘If teachers lose their jobs then everybody will start coloring outside the lines! Even teenagers!’
That’s right teachers. You have a very important job teaching us how to stay in line and how to keep order in this crazy world. Keep up the good work!
