Duck! That’s what Kate said to do. She said her big Lacrosse tip of the day is to duck when you see a ball flying at your head. Good tip!
This year Issaquah Lacrosse decided to open up a session for 2nd grade girls. When I asked Kate if she wanted to play I fully expected her to turn me down. There is running in lacrosse and she has been quite vocal in her stance against all sports that involve running. Turns out her only concern was the ability levels of the other players. ‘I’m sure everybody else already knows how to play’, she worried.
I quickly pointed out that since this was the first year they were offering lacrosse for 2nd grade girls, this would be the first time for most of them. ‘Yeah,’ Ellie chimed in. ‘You will all be bad!’.
Nothing like having your sister ease your mind.
Before the first practice started we called in the big guns and had Uncle Tim, a high school Lacrosse whiz, come give Kate some lessons. He taught her how to cradle and scoop so she went into the first practice with some confidence. (Except for the whole getting hit in the head with the ball at the end of the tutorial. It turned her off any other non-sanctioned practices but it did help her develop her aforementioned mantra.)
The neat thing about these clinics is they are being run by high school lacrosse players. They are enthusiastic which makes the little girls enthusiastic and all the drills they run during practice are fun. These girls impart all sorts of golden nuggets. Right down to the basics like ‘Kate, you need to take your stick if you are going into the game!’. Good stuff!
The other favorite pastime of these little girls is stick twirling. This often happens when coaches are talking or working with other players and boredom sets in. I can see why Kate’s big Lacrosse tip is so handy!
I hope Kate decides to stick with this. (Get the pun? I crack myself up!) The coaches are a neat bunch of girls and if that is what we have to look forward to then I’m in too! Of course, if this lacrosse thing doesn’t work out then maybe she has a future with the Flag Team? She seems pretty handy with the stick!
