Mr. Fun and I started reading the My Father Daughter blog a few months ago. It inspired Allen to want to take his girls on a special one on one trip. We thought 14 was the perfect age to start this so here is Jill’s take on this special weekend. These are her words and pictures.
For my birthday I got to go to Chicago to see a Christian concert with my dad. We were only there for the weekend but we saw so much! One of the first things we saw was The Cloud Gate (or known to locals as The Bean), it is completely made of reflective metal, and so everywhere you look if you’re under it, is your reflection.
We also walked down Navy Pier, and I got a lot of good pictures of the Chicago skyline. We didn’t realize until the very end of the pier that there was an inside portion too, so we got to walk back through a stained glass museum and learn all about Chicago history from posters along our walk through the museum.
*Did you know*: Chicago means wild, smelly onion in the Potawatomi Indian language? Chicago was the first place to be named after a food.
Of course for lunch we had to eat Chicago deep-dish pizza. Out of all the pizzas I have eaten I have to admit this one was the best. That pizza had so much cheese, and instead of it being on the top it was in the middle between the sauce and the crust.
After lunch we got to head to the concert, it started at 6:00, but we had early admission passes. One of the benefits of getting in early, were that we got to see a special little question and answer with some of the people from the bands on tour. We mainly went to see two of my favorite Christian artists: Jamie Grace, and Tobymac. Neither of them did the interview, but we now know new info about new artists who we didn’t know of until the concert.
My overall reflection of the concert was that it was really good. It was kind of funny though, because in between some of the artists, they actually had a speaker come up and give a sermon. We were expecting some of the groups to be loud, and we were warned about Tobymac being loud, but one group (Red) was insane. They had all sorts of sparks falling from the ceiling, and flames coming up from the stage on every big note! One of my favorite parts, though, was getting to see some of my favorite songs played, such as Hold Me by Jamie Grace, and Funky Jesus Music by Tobymac.
On our last (and second) day, we finished off the trip by walking around a bit more, and getting a chance to ride the El (elevated train), and the subway, neither of which I have ridden before. Finally, on our way to the airport we stopped at the world’s biggest McDonalds, because who can pass up that chance! Let’s just say that two stories, two counters, and an escalator count as huge in my book.
Overall the trip was really fun, and I will always remember it. But I can’t forget to mention that because I went on this trip with Mr. Fun, I met all sorts of random people I would have never even thought of. Some of which included the guy who worked in the lobby of the hotel, all the people sitting around us at the concert, the ladies working at the World Vision booth at the concert, and the lady sitting next to us on the plane home (who I now know works for Nordstrom, and was coming to Seattle for a two week work trip).
Thanks for a great time Mr. Fun!
