Given that most of the other lessons refer to parts of the exposure triangle we decided to jump right in to this complicated subject. The kids were amazing about keeping up with my ramblings and they eagerly asked and answered questions. I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying their enthusiasm!
While I was searching the internet looking for easy ways to explain the relationship between shutter speed, ISO and aperture I found this analogy. I love how simple it makes this concept (so long as you are willing to go along with the whole sunglasses inside part!).
Let’s break these three elements down a bit more…
The little graphic at the bottom of this next slide is from the Sony dSLR camera line. I’ve never tried their cameras (I’m a Canon shooter) but I do love how easy it is for the visual types to read this graphic and understand shutter speed (top) and aperture (bottom). Just know that the darker the room or environment you are shooting in, the further to the left of this graph you need to be.
I finished the lesson by showing the kids some images and asked them what concept I was working on in the shot (shutter speed or aperture)…
We finished the night by challenging the kids to practice this week playing with their shutter speed or aperture. I had quite a few kids email their pictures to me last week and I was so impressed. I can hardly wait to see what I get this week!
