This is one of Jill’s favorite definitions of herself and her posse. (Quote from John and Hank Green.) These guys really ARE made of awesome! Right now Jill is really into Dr. Who. Since most of her buddies are also into it, and we haven’t had that kind of party yet, we had ourselves a theme.
I know, I know! I said we really wouldn’t have parties after 13 and I totally lied. How can you not still celebrate your kid? And this might just be a little bit for me too…maybe. Anyway, the theme only went as far as the cakes and the scavenger hunt. I would like to point out that Mr. Fun and I have only ever see three episodes of Dr. Who between the two of us. So it was a minor miracle that we could figure out enough Dr. Who ‘things’ to pull together a theme at all. Thank goodness for the internet!
So, here is the table and the cakes. Since the main color for Dr. Who is blue, that is what color we went with table and for the drinks too. And of course the brownies had to be decorated like the Tardis.
As if the brownies aren’t enough, I also made solid chocolate tardis and daleks.
Mr. Fun really out did himself this year with the scavenger hunt. He planned nine evil clues that took an hour and a half to complete. (We did stop for 20 minutes for some pizza to keep up their strength.) Madison, who does not know Dr. Who either, actually came up with a big percentage of the answers…probably because she was thinking like us. The other nerd fighters were much too literal and possibly offended by our inaccuracies.
There was a texting clue, a phone a friend (or a parent in this case), a word scramble and there was even a math clue. The kids had to look on Wikipdedia to answer all sorts of questions (What year did it start, how many missing episodes, how many series, etc.) and then do the math to figure out that the next clue was behind our house number, 1530. That Mr. Fun sure is clever!
One of the clues was tucked in a pillow on Jill’s new bed. I took this picture to show Colin’s mom that he does, indeed, know how to make a bed!
At the end of the scavenger hunt they found some screwdrivers. I couldn’t find Sonic Screwdrivers (it’s a Dr. Who thing) but I thought a 12 in 1 stubby screwdriver was a pretty magical (not to mention useful) substitute.
Finally I thought they would end the night by watching some Dr. Who but they got sucked into some board games and some laughs instead. I believe I heard a certain Nerdfighter claim, in her own quiet way, that this was one of the best birthdays ever. A big thanks to her posse for making it so much fun!
