For years now people have called me Martha behind my back. Actually, plenty have called me that to my my front too! I like the idea of Martha. I like the idea of making a beautiful, comfortable home, I like being well organized, and I like to throw a good party. All true!
However, I’ve only read a few of her magazines and seen just a couple of her shows because she doesn’t match up with my KISS (keep it simple stupid) philosophy. If the recipe involves snipping chives from my own garden or a morter and pestle them I’m out. I also won’t do any crafts that take days to complete because of some sort of curing time or skewering dried fruit on toothpicks. Let me explain that last statement. One year, early in our marriage, I read Martha’s holiday issue and I was inspired to make a wreath completely covered in cranberries. Yes, I took a foam wreath form and covered it with hundreds of cranberries that I’d skewered with toothpicks. It took days to complete. I proudly hung it on our front door and less than 24 hours later it lay on the ground in our front entrance in at least 7 different pieces. A victim of Allen’s tardiness on a collision course with a punctual city bus. Heartbreaking!
Anyhoo, those cupcakes above were my creation for Ellie’s birthday dinner last Thursday. Ellie did not want to have dinner at a restaurant because she is so shy about having strangers sing Happy Birthday. Instead she requested hot dogs, Sun Chips and grapes by candle light. Oh yeah, and she also wanted flower cupcakes. Since I don’t know how to make any sort of frosting creations I turned to cutlery and gumdrops.
Stay tuned for Elllie’s birthday party pictures tomorrow…
