I have no idea how this evolved or how I got so lucky. After years of reading picture books, and easy readers we have finally evolved into the ‘read-in’. Most nights Jill and Ellie come to me to request a read-in instead of stories. This is where we get in our jammies, climb into my bed, and all read silently together for about an hour. Occaisionally the girls will share a funny part of their book, but for the most part we just snuggle down and read. How great is that? With the crazy way things are these days, this is often the only time I have to get to my book!
This set up usually means Allen is reading picture books with Kate in her room. The older girls don’t ask Allen because he isn’t usually reading a book (not that he doesn’t like to, just that he would get too far behind in all his sports magazines if he had competing reading material) AND he often falls asleep if he is lying still for too long! Of course, he has been known to fall asleep while actually reading a story too. Poor Kate has to keep him on his toes!
PS – If you want a book that will make you feel better about your parenting skills then pick up the book Glass Castles by Jeanette Wells. This book makes ALL parents look good by comparison!
