Last week we spent a glorious, albeit cold, week up in Whistler. We weren’t missing much at home because it was cold there too, but folks, it only got warmer than 60 degrees one day in the six we were there. That called for me to purchase a new fleece. I was fully justified, right? As you can see from the picture above, when we rode the gondola to the top of the mountain there was snow. And not just old snow. There was an inch of new from the night before and it was snowing while we were there. On June 30th. The oddest thing about this trip was watching the dichotomy of people. In the village you would see those hopeful types running around in shorts and a tank top (they must have been warm blooded!) and then there were those crazies dressed up for skiing carrying their equipment to the ski lift, and then there were those in the middle who were hard core mountain bikers. You just never knew!
There are something like 30 miles of hiking and biking trails around Whistler (and at least as many bears). The girls loved riding their bikes with Dubs, Grandpa, Deana and Mr. Fun to various locations. All sorts of cool parks or the village were the favorite destinations. I really hadn’t ridden a bike since they instituted the helmet laws so you can imagine how rusty I was. (Okay, let’s hear it…’It’s just like riding a bike!’. I know that’s what you were thinking!) The girls thought it was hilarious when I borrowed Dubs’ bike and rode with them to the park. I have to admit that it really was fun but don’t expect miracles people. I live at the top of a big hill. BIG hill! I won’t be rushing out to buy a bike anytime soon, but maybe this summer I’ll borrow Mr. Fun’s while he is at work and see how it goes. Then again, maybe I won’t.
On our last day we checked out the Activity Center at the base of Blackcomb. They had all sorts games for the big and little kids in our group to do. All three girls chose to do a maze together that was VERY challenging and quite humorous for us to watch from up above. Then Ellie and Kate hopped on the Sky High bungy ride.
Jill’s second ride was a summer luge type ride. Allen, Deana and I thought we should also participate in this ride. Just to supervise. Right? Deana did an amazing job of putting together four pictures of us at the end of the ride. Too cool!
One of the best parts about these kinds of vacations is the hanging out. The chance to just be with extended family and enjoy the things that come from that chill time. One of my favorites were the board games and card games that ensued. Jill and Ellie really enjoyed playing Scrabble and Clue with Dubs and Dean. Little Miss Card Shark, Kate, took great pleasure in beating Grandpa time and again at both Uno AND Skip Bo. You can’t even cheat at those games (as in Grandpa letting Kate win). She beat him fair and square. (Although she did allow him one win which ensured that he would want to keep playing with her. It gave him a brief taste of victory!)

Thanks Dean and Wanda for letting us join you for your Whistler adventure!
